The Touring L sits in the lower rung of the Swedish luggage mover's range, and is an ideal choice for families that like an adventure on a budget. Different sizes are available to suit your needs or indeed your car.

This model will swallow enough bags and equipment to keep you satisfied, whilst the internal straps keep everything secure. Optional extras include a perfect fit luggage system, and a ski carrier adapter.

Marketed with the FastClick system, it mounts easily and simply with its torque monitored claws. A single strong person can get it up onto the roof, though two would be essential in windy conditions.

With the roof box opening on both sides, you can be safe on the continent should you need to gain entry on the side of the road. Although it is a two-handed job to do so, more expensive models allow one-handed entry.

The one we tested looked wonderful in gloss black, and perhaps offers longevity in the timeless looks stakes. The other colourway option is silver in Thule's Aeroskin material, which translates as a pleasing textured, bobbly surface.

The luggage-hauling stats are impressive too: 420 litres in total from a box that's 196cm long, 78cm wide and 43cm high. Load capacity is 50kg. If heading for the slopes (adapter required), the box will take 5-7 skis, or 4-5 snowboards, with a maximum ski length of 180cm.

With the size, finish and price considered, we were very impressed with the Touring L's ability - borrowing some of the specs from its higher ranged siblings, this roof box has more than enough features and quality to keep it ahead of cheaper rivals.
