Alpkit's description of the Filoment encourages users to think of the jacket as a 'lightweight, windproof fleece'. Consequently it's a versatile insulation layer marketed as suitable for hillwalking, mountaineering, belaying, alpine pursuits and even just everyday life too.

Our testing confirmed all of these claims and we have a lot of positive things to say about the Filoment. But first let's look at that price, because £99 is extremely competitive for a jacket of this spec. Alpkit manages to offer such low prices for its products by manufacturing carefully managed quantities of its kit, only selling through its own website, and passing the savings on to customers. It's a system that works well, but bear in mind that you may have to wait a while or be persistent to get the garment you're hoping for.

That aside, let's look at the Filoment. Insulation is provided via 650 fill duck down. This is not the most efficient of materials, hence why the jacket it slightly bulkier than more expensive alternatives. But that really is the only niggle we can find with it. Weight averages 325g, which is competitive, and the savviness of the design makes this a much warmer layer than you might assume.

The elasticated hem and wrists are perfectly judged, as is the well-insulated neck - removing the need for any adjustment. The cut extends down to the buttocks, which helps keep more of your body warm, while the storage options of two hand pockets and a single chest pocket are very nicely executed. All three extend very far into the jacket, making stowage of even the largest outdoor items (e.g. a Harvey's Mountain Map) a breeze.

Movement is unrestricted, the series of baffles trap and even out the down nicely, and it even has a DWR (durable water repellent) coating too - although this is not a jacket to get wet.

You'll need to buy a separate 1-litre dry bag to store it (there's no pocket pouch here), but that's no great issue.

In conclusion: a superbly designed and effortlessly warm jacket for the price, and if you're in the market for an insulated down layer you should seriously consider buying one.
