Super-stylish and highly travel-focussed features
Could benefit from a slightly more aggressive lug pattern

Hanwag have very specifically aimed the Cameros Wide at the emerging active/travel crossover market, with a wide last for comfort and features that can handle a range of environments such as G1000 fabric and a breathable lining.

The first thing you'll notice though is the striking looks; if Italian brands have cornered the market in outdoor style then this German company might be about to shake things up. This is the best looking travel/trail shoe we've seen in a long while, and it's particularly refreshing to see styling that isn't trying to imitate the 'Scarpa' look, as is all-too common.

Hanwag have taken cues - and fabric tech - from Swedish brand-of-the-moment Fjallraven, in the form of their proprietary G1000 fabric. And it turns out to be a great choice in footwear, being way more breathable than a membrane and water repellent enough for all but the heaviest downpours and boggiest ground. It's also super-durable (membranes tend to be a little delicate) and the weather proofing can be boosted with Greenland Wax.

Soft leather and perforations around the cuff, along with the Hanwag Bio Ceramic lining boost the breathability making the Cameros really well suited to changing conditions, and very effective at regulating foot temperature.

The sole unit - featuring a hexagonal structure - is designed for grip on wet surfaces, and while the rubber boasts great traction, the lug pattern may struggle on the muddiest of British hills; but that's not what they're designed for.

Perhaps the most eye-catching feature for some is the wide fit. Our reviewer has pretty narrow feet and didn't find the Cameros overly roomy, but the wider forefoot definitely increases all day comfort by allowing the toes to spread quite naturally.

The Hanwag Cameros Wide are maybe slightly on the pricey side, but they are superbly well-built, incredibly comfortable, and perform brilliantly in a good-weather, active travel scenario. Our favourite shoe in this category.
