The Austrian Tirol has long been an inspiring destination for mountain bike riders, with more than 5,600km of mountain bike routes and some 900km of cycle paths through magnificent mountain scenery

Now, new for 2014, the region has launched a new lift-assisted Tirol Mountain Bike Safari - a long-distance route crisscrossing the heart of the Alps on nearly 670km of twisty, fun mountain bike trails. In total, the safari has 15 stages, beginning in Nauders on Reschen Pass, which is the border to Italy and ending at the beautiful Lake Walchsee.

In all, the route includes more than 25,000m of elevation gain, but 12,000m of this are served by 18 gondolas and chairlifts. So, whether you’re seeking insane excitement or more mellow scenic rides the new Tirol Mountain Bike Safari promises you the reward end of ‘what goes up, must come down’ without exerting too much effort on the ‘up’ part.

A new multi-day lift ticket (three or six-day) will be available so mountain bikers can use it with all the participating mountain lift companies.

The idea to utilise the mountain cable cars was initiated in the mid-1990s and finally in 2014 it has become a reality, after the various tourism regions have worked closely together to create a mountain bike network, using the existing lift infrastructure.
