Taking your family to a canoeing starter session is the perfect introduction to summer paddling fun, finds Neil Pedoe
collision course
Sliding under another ornate bridge with colourful hanging baskets dripping down towards the canal, our Canadian style canoe drifts sideways as I stop paddling to take a photo of my son bearing down on us in his canoe, a huge grin spread across his six-year-old face.

Behind him, the quiet, smiling, and thankfully steering Paul Carroll from Bath Canoe Club is calmly in control of this Go Canoeing Starter session, and is clearly used to over-excited kids in boats. There have been no raised voices, almost no rules, and no hard work, as we paddle and splash our way past the gardens and parks of Regency Bath.

For the grown-ups there’s a mini-historical tour as Paul points out the landmarks and mechanisms of this industrial revolution artery, running past mills and pumping stations. For the kids, there’re ripples to be made from dragging hands through still waters, wildlife to spot and the important business of splashing your sister.

“All that matters is that they have fun, and stay safe” says Paul, who has provided and checked the life jackets, canoes and paddles, and even sorted the kids out with all-important certificates. Judging by the smiles on the children’s faces, it’s mission accomplished.
