Given that Canolfan Tryweryn, near Bala, was established in 1972 with the aim of providing white-water facilities for recreational kayaking and coaching courses, this is the place to head for to develop your white-water skills.

For beginners, Plas-y-Brenin offers weekend and week-long complete starter courses, including one for entire families. For those who fancy a spot of sea kayaking, Plas-y-Brenin again runs weekend and week-long courses for beginners with flat-water paddling skills, as well as courses for intermediate and advanced sea kayakers, based around the coast of Anglesey and the Lleyn Peninsula. Requirements: Kayaking at Canolfan Tryweryn, and sea kayaking requires previous experience.

Two-day sea kayaking course, approx £180, two-day beginners’ course, approx £175
