Portree Youth Hostel, The Isle of Skye

Lochranza Youth Hostel, The Isle of Arran

As winner of the prestigious Green Tourism Business Goldstar Award 2011, Lochranza Youth Hostel is ranked as one of the UK’s top ten greenest businesses.

The hostel offers excellent budget and group accommodation (4 star) but is also family friendly with private en-suite rooms, a spacious self-catering kitchen and laundry service available.

Recently renovated the hostel is situated on the banks of Loch Ranza, opposite a 13th-century ruined castle in beautiful countryside. The hostel is also located on the Cock of Arran trail, which provides a beautifully scenic low level trek. The youth hostel garden is a great spot to watch wildlife, including red deer, red squirrel, grey seals, otters and golden eagles.

Oban Youth Hostel, ‘Gateway to the Inner Hebrides’

Oban Youth Hostel is a beautiful Victorian building recently refurbished to 5 Star Standard and is the only 5 Star SYHA youth hostel outside Edinburgh. Sitting on the sea front you get views over the Firth of Lorne and to the Inner Hebrides.

The hostel offers a choice of two buildings – the original Victorian building or modern lodge to the rear, both offering excellent budget accommodation.

The hostel offers traditional multi-share accommodation and private rooms, all with en suite. Eating options include two superb self-catering kitchens but meals are also available in the beautiful Raasay Dining Room.

A secret gem at Oban Youth Hostel is the self-contained flat which sleeps up to 8 people and is ideal for families and small groups.

Loch Ossian Youth Hostel, Rannoch Moor

Loch Ossian Youth Hostel is a small, homely eco youth hostel, situated on the banks of Loch Ossian, in the Outdoor Capital of the UK, with exquisite views. Our eco hostel has a fully equipped self-catering kitchen but no fridge. Perishables can be kept cool in the north-facing washrooms or in the loch! Drying is available on two overhead racks and boot stands by the fire.

Although there are no showers, the washrooms have hot water and towels are available for hire or purchase. Loch Ossian has a small shop with 'Beyond the Beaten Track' ready meals, a range of snacking essentials, postcards and sundries, such as midge repellent! At Loch Ossian Youth Hostel the staff are very proud of the eco-hostel status. Electricity is provided by a wind turbine, composting toilets are used and a reed bed is used to soak away for grey water.

Accommodation at Loch Ossian is only available in multi-share but groups and families do have the option of booking a dorm room for exclusive use. Children and families are most welcome at Loch Ossian Youth Hostel and there is a range of games and activities for families at the hostel.

In extreme weather the youth hostel normally remains open during the day. Loch Ossian Youth Hostel is an excellent base for hillwalkers, as it is surrounded by Munros. Indeed, located in the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor, this hostel is only accessible by bike, on foot, or by rail, with Corrour railway station (West Highlands Glasgow to Fort William line) a 20 minute walk away along a well-made track.

Glen Affric Youth Hostel, Scottish Highlands

Glen Affric Youth Hostel is a unique and remote youth hostel in a wide river valley surrounded by high mountains. Situated 8 miles from the nearest road, this Eco-Hostel offers an unforgettable experience. A former stalking bothy on the Glen Affric Estate it is a haven for walkers, nature lovers and those seeking solitude.

On the doorstep are 15 Munro hills and good tracks through the valleys for both walking and mountain biking. The youth hostel is only accessible on foot or by mountain bike, and you need to allow at least 3-4 hours for the walk in.

The location is very special and it is the closest you will get to an Alpine Hut in Scotland. A great experience awaits those who are prepared to make the effort to visit.

There aren’t even any signs, so a good map, compass, torch and appropriate clothing are essential. The weather can change in an instant and streams can become difficult to cross after heavy rain.
