When you see images of Austria as a white wonderland, it is sometimes hard to imagine what happens when the snow melts away. What remains is the same beautiful natural scenery but this time in colour, with every possible shade of green painted into the landscape.

The traditional Tirolean houses are brought to life and the mountains are calling for a different type of adventure. Walking, hiking, mountain biking, cycling, climbing, paragliding – any outdoor adventure sport you can imagine, you can do it in the Austrian Tirol. The appeal broadens, tempting travellers of all walks of life, from couples of all ages, groups of friends and families looking for something different to that run of the mill holiday.

When times are hard a main consideration is the cost of a typical week’s summer holiday to Austria. The beauty of the Tirol region is that there is a holiday to suit every pocket, thanks to the range of accommodation from B&Bs, apartments and hotels to farm stays and camping.

After some number-crunching we found a holiday as affordable as €35 per person in a guesthouse in Landeck and as luxurious as €180 per person per night in the 5* Hotel Kaiserhof in Ellmau with many, many options in between. Expect to pay from £26.99 per person one-way for flights with easyJet from London Gatwick to Innsbruck, with up to three fl ights a week. Daily flights from the UK to Salzburg and Munich airports allow easy access to many of the resorts across the Tirol region.

Locally, prices represent great value for money when compared with neighbouring countries and the local tourist offices should always be your first port of call as they offer many additional programmes or guest cards, allowing you to get more out of your holiday.
