Sole isn't as technical as some competitors for this price

Ecco, a giant Danish firm with a big presence in the general footwear market, makes few walking-focused models. The Biom Terrain, however, is the best of them. With a yak leather construction and Gore-Tex lining it's billed as being tough, durable and extremely comfortable. If you hanker after all-day smooth support on the trails then it's aimed at you.

The overall design of the Biom Terrain is an interesting one, and Ecco claims to have based it on much research into the 'optimum motion path of a barefoot runner'. There's no arguing with the smooth and unobtrusive nature of the action when roaming hillside paths, while the roominess within the boot is best suited to those with a broader rather than a narrower shape of foot.

The sole is relatively non-technical and doesn't bear a very sizeable heel brake, but it is formed by a 'direct injection' method, which means there's no glueing or stitching it to the upper (i.e. it won't come away under heavy use). Still, while the rubber build offers good traction it's definitely outclassed by a number of competing three-season boots that sit £20-£30 higher in price.

The styling of certain colour schemes is a little clown-like, but we were very impressed not only by the luxurious level of cushioning from the inner sole to the (relatively low) heel cuff, but by the strong toe rand, padding over the ankles, the protective cage around the heel and the solid lacing system.

To fit all of these positives into such a lightweight package is commendable, and there's no arguing with the padding and cushioning on offer. This might not be the most precise and technical boot, but you'll be able to wear it all day without a second thought.

In conclusion: Lightweight, extremely comfy, well weather-proofed and with enough technical performance for the majority of walkers, the Biom Terrain boot is an excellent 3-season choice.
