La Sportiva's mid-cut protective boot - which boasts leather uppers and a breathable Gore Tex membrane, is an approach boot designed for technical approach routes, via ferrata and general hiking.

Many years ago, I remember being in an outdoor shop and asking for a supportive boot that could easily be carried when not worn; the reply I got was, "Wouldn't we all!" Well maybe, just maybe the TX4 Mid GTX is just that boot.

The TX4 MID GTX stands out in a saturated market for many reasons, but possibly the most noticeable one is that this rugged, deal with almost anything, boot comes in at 485g (each boot), which whilst not insignificant, is not very heavy when considering the level of support and durability the TX4 Mid offers.

The tough MegaGrip Vibram sole, with its firm 'climbing zone' at the toe and ridged 'Impact Brake System' on the sole, make the boot ideal for basic climbing and long hikes over technical terrain.

I've hiked in the highlands of Scotland in the TX4 Mid GTX and even climbed a multi-pitch V-Diff route in these boots. They performed perfectly well, gripping to wet rock and offering support on the smallest of holds. I also used them on the Sgurr nan Gillean west ridge traverse on Skye, one of the finest routes of its kind in the UK and the TX4's performed perfectly.

What I really like is the PU TechLite all-round rubber band and protective rubber top cap, which raises from the sole to cover the first two inches of the soft upper the whole way around the boot - guaranteeing high abrasion resistance and adding stability, whilst keeping the overall weight down.

There is no compromise in the sole or feel of these boots, while not overly lively, the sole offers a good spring while retaining a firm feel on grass and rock, the ankle support is good - although the fit around the shin is a little loose, allowing for the odd small stone to find its way into the boot.

I put the TX4 Mid GTX on straight from the box and took a wet four hour hike without feeling any pressure points or chafing, in fact, I'd go as far as to say they are the most comfortable boots I've ever put on straight from the box, and as a plus my feet didn't get wet. The lacing system is taken from the Mythos climbing shoe, and, whilst offering easy adjustment, the boots are possibly best suited to those with a narrower foot.

Overall, the TX4 Mid GTX is the perfect boot for comfortable three-season ascents and journeys, on all but the most technical of climbs.
