Mavic's XA Elite shoe is an SPD mountain biking shoe designed with versatility paramount to ensure that it is as comfortable and sure-footed when you're walking between rides on your travels as you are when pedalling.

To this end the Mavic has built the XA Elite onto its Energy Grip Trail Outsole, which has the heel-to-toe stiffness you need for efficient energy transfer when pedalling, as well as walking traction on all surfaces. A toe-to-arch pedal channel makes for easy cleat finding when putting the foot back on the pedal.

The uppers are cut lower than more dedicated trail shoes, with ankle protection sacrificed for weight and comfort - the assumption being that the XA Elite is not aimed at racers or downhillers. Another upside is that this has left lots of space for ventilation, in the form of nine mesh panels in the sides and toe box.

The closure system is the most noticeable design departure from the norm of Velcro straps or laces, opting instead for a Quick Lace pull cord system. Simply pull the cord tight and push the toggle down, then wrap the looped Velcro strap back across the top to locking the chosen tension. It's a clever system that is much easier and quicker and probably lighter than laces - and it works. Complementing the Quick Lace system is Mavic's densely padded Endofit tongue which stretches all the way down each side of the shoe hugging the mid-foot in almost sock-like comfort.

On the trail the Mavics delivered what they promised - they're no superlight, ultra-stiff racing shoe, nor a super-flexible trainer with an SPD cleat. Instead, they're the best of both worlds, giving you an excellent option for mountain bike touring, for example, or bike packing tours - or even a multi-day leisure cycling tour.
