With a built-in 3500mA battery, and 5v 2 Amp output, the Solarmonkey has the oomph to recharge an iPhone up to two times, a GPS up to three times and squeeze your dead iPad or tablet up to a useful 25 percent battery charge.

The beauty of the Solarmonkey is that even once fully discharged, you can simply open it up (still in its padded protective case), hang it on the back of your backpack as you walk from the included carabiner, and then by the end of the day you'll have more juice to power up your devices again.

Thanks to a 'daisy chain' charging ability the charger will also recharge its battery with solar power at the same time as it charges a device, via its included Micro USB. An AC mains charger is also available but not included.

We found charging to be reliable even in patchy cloud conditions and a colour changing LED for charge level is extremely useful for eking out precious charge.

Other useful feature which translate to excellent reliability - especially in the rough and tumble of outdoors travel - include short-circuit protection, overload and low-voltage protection, and thermal insulation for the battery which gives it an operating temperature range of -10 to 90 C.
