Ontario

Canada's most populous province, Ontario may have a more gentle landscape than some of its mountainous sister states, but beyond the urban city limits the lowlands, highlands, forests and tundra are wild and remote.

The province is broadly divided into three regions, the densely forested Canadian Shield in the north, the swampy low-lying tundra of the Hudson Bay Lowlands in the extreme north and northeast, and Southern Ontario, with its warm climate, forests, great lakes and freshwater beaches. Southern Ontario is also home to the Niagara Escarpment – the cliff over which the Niagara River pours at Niagara Falls. Fans of two wheels will find thousands of kilometers of trails through Ontario's boreal forest, on old logging trails and under the majestic of 100-year old white pine trees. Bruce County just north of Toronto is a hot spot for mountain biking within reach of the country's largest city. With over half a million incredible lakes and rivers, Ontario is a paradise for watersports. The north shore of Lake Superior lies in Ontario and is perfect for canoeing and kayaking -  the largest of the Great Lakes of North America is more like a sea than a lake, and the coast is dotted with bays and beaches ready for exploring. In Northern Ontario travel by floatplane, train and canoe to experience the space and silence of this remote region. Further east towards Hudson Bay the wild hills and mountains are a hiker's dream.
