Standing proud at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, Richmond is one of Britain’s most beautiful and vibrant market towns. Dominated by its imposing 11th-century castle, it is one of the most architecturally rich towns in the north of England with fine historic buildings, a sweeping cobbled marketplace, bustling independent shops, and leafy riverside vistas.
Altberg has been based in Richmond since its inception in 1989, growing from a small specialist to its status today as a much-loved hiking boot manufacturer and a supplier to police and military organisations around the world. Visiting the Altberg location above the town, the lucky winners of this competition will partake in a fascinating factory tour and a personal boot fitting. Will writes: “Customers travel from miles around – often after less satisfactory visits to larger retailers – to be measured, assessed, and fitted by people who truly understand the boots they’re selling. If someone needs extra width around the toe or additional heel padding, these adjustments can be made just a few feet away.”
The lucky winner and their guest will also get to stay at The Fleece Hotel in the heart of Richmond’s old town, with dinner, bed and breakfast included for two nights. One of Richmond’s most distinguished Grade II listed buildings, each room tells its own story, thoughtfully designed to make your stay unforgettable, with the renowned Fleece restaurant serving a delicious seasonal menu using local Yorkshire produce from breakfast to dinner.
You’ll also enjoy a guided walk led by Mark Reid of TeamWalking. An acclaimed outdoor writer, experienced Mountain Leader and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Mark loves to share his passion for the outdoors. Operating as a guide for nearly 30 years, over that time he’s taken over 21,000 people out over 33,000 miles of footpaths, has written 17 walking guidebooks, and has exceptional local knowledge.
