Hardwearing G1000 Eco fabric
Would have liked a slightly closer fit in the torso

Sitting in the Keb family of clothing, the Kaipak Jacket is a softshell trekking option for hiking and daily use.

With a generous fit the Kaipak's intentions aren't those of athletic ascents up craggy peaks but more of slow, immersive walks where you appreciate your surroundings as much as the activity itself.

Construction is a single layer of G1000 Eco - a cotton and polyester blend, treatable with Greenland Wax to add water resistance. A hint of performance is added by underarm panels which are both breathable and stretchy for unencumbered freedom of movement.

A long cut at the hem gives great protection from the wind and the sturdy G1000 material feels like it gives some protection to your upper legs when you're battling through dense undergrowth. If this doesn't suit your style the Kaipak can be hoisted up to waist level using the drawstring hem adjusters for a slightly different look, but also to provide an effective seal against draughts of wind.

Ample resistance from the elements is offered by a high chin and deep hood, this comes with volume adjusters to provide a close fit and you really feel like you're battening down the hatches when you zip and cinch everything up tight.

At 750g the Kaipak is a considerable weight to be carrying in a pack so it's best used when the weather dictates that you can keep it on, when you do it's a joy. If you're going hiking in mild conditions with hints of wind then the Kaipak makes an excellent top layer with a lightweight waterproof carried in your pack in case of rain.

Given these conditions the Kaipak feels breathable and more natural to wear than plasticky mid layers and jackets and the looks are dialled down enough for reasonable amounts of use in more casual environments.

Build quality is superb, the G1000 fabric is incredibly hard wearing and the workmanship is excellent, which altogether makes you want to take the Kaipak deep into the woods and forests.

Overall another great jacket from Fjallraven, sitting somewhere between the Keb and Skogso in both performance and looks.
