The Field Pants appear to be constructed as a kind of workwear for woodsmen; stretchy, water resistant, sun-blocking, and incredibly rugged. Perhaps they're too heavy-duty for travelling?

The durability of these pants, which is their major selling point, is impressive. The primary material is nylon, with a touch of Spandex to give that stretch. But the front of the leg is three-quarters covered in a much tougher 500-denier nylon which really shrugs off most of what the woods - and those angry spiky plants of foreign climes - can throw at you.

The really impressive thing though is that the tough facing fabric doesn't add too much weight. It's some feat of engineering that the Field Pants come in at a claimed 453 grams while being so obviously battle-ready.

In travel use, that double-layer construction makes them a little too warm for comfort in hot weather, naturally, but in UK summer and most of the year in Europe for example, the Field Pants are much lighter and airier than they appear.

A couple of zipped pockets add some travel security, and the look is at the toned-down end of workwear, so they'd be perfectly acceptable in social situations too.

And that Patagonia construction and styling comes in at a very reasonable price, so unless you're heading to the hottest of destinations, the Field Pants represent cracking value.
