Tour de France Crashes | 10 Savage Crash Photos
The time is upon us for the world famous Tour de France to become a topic of conversation once again, as the best road cyclists in the world battle through the land of baguette and saucisson to take the yellow jersey.
It’s the most watched singular sport event in the world; the third most popular sporting event to be more precise, after the Olympics and FIFA World Cup. But you’ll see none of the competitors rolling on the floor after an opponent grazed their hamstring here. No, no, no. The Tour de France is for hard men.
Every year the Tour de France brings its batch of breathtaking landscapes, amazing races, contested finishes, drugs affairs and yes, chaotic crashes. Massive crashes. Some of the worst crashes you’ll ever see.
Road cycling can be dangerous. Most of all when you are sprinting for the win to the finish line speeding over 60km/h. Here are a selection of ten insane crash photos from the Tour de France.
Tour de France Crashes | Not the first time this has happened...
Mark Cavendish takes a pretty spectacular tumble in 2010, only to be repeated in 2014… and when this happens you know what’s happening to the rest of the pack behind him.
Wave goodbye to your saddles kids, it’s time to meet the floor.
Tour de France Crashes | Neon Danger
Even wearing 90s neon atrocities like these cyclists wasn’t enough to prevent some savage crashes in the Tour de France.
Note our friend in pink on the left here, who at first almost blends into the background, and then once you’ve seen him, completely takes over the picture.
He’s flying head first towards some tasty tarmac. What other event could you have this the left side of the picture in such utter carnage and the right side still encapsulated by the sprint for the finish.
Tour de France Crashes | Bundle!
Which muppet started this one?
Whoever it was, you wouldn’t want to be at the bottom of the pile. Looks like the boys in blue are going to stick around and watch the aftermath for a laugh though. Not like there’s a race to be won or anything…
Tour de France Crashes | You won't believe who caused this one...
Yep, a dog. A dog?! A dog. A cheeky little dog with an eye for chaos.
Tour de France crashes caused by a dog are renowned for being particularly annoying, since having not been caused by a fellow rider, there’s nobody to fight afterwards.
Tour de France Crashes | And this one
…by a man who thought he saw a dog… but didn’t.
Which of course is better than the crash being caused by a dog, because on this occasion, there was someone to fight afterwards.
Tour de France crashes ain’t pretty, but they sure are colourful.
Tour de France Crashes | Sirens A-Calling
A Tour de France crash is big, a Tour de France crash is wide, a Tour de France crash takes up the entire road, so no-one can get round the side.
Tour de France Crashes | Ouch!
John Hoogerland gets himself entangled in some gnarly-looking barbed wire… and this was the outcome! This is arguably the most gruesome Tour de France crash you’ll ever see. Wah!

Tour de France Crashes | The Final Stretch
Tour de France crash conversation #1:
Rider 1: “Right who’s fault was this?”
Rider 2: “Not mine”
Rider 3: “Not mine”
Rider 4: “Err….”
Rider 5: “Not mine”
Rider 6: “That’s a nice pink lycra top you’ve got there Steve.”
Tour de France Crashes | Finally, this infamous moment...
Not exactly a Tour de France bike crash… but we couldn’t help including it. It’s a beauty.
This is the moment the Orica GreenEdge bus got trapped under the finish line on the first stage of the Tour de France in 2013, and a crazy crash with just 6km left brought down half the peloton.
The Tour de France organisers decided to move the finish to the 3km line just down the road, then the bus started reversing and the organisers reversed their decision as a result.
It was all a bit confusing. Poor Mark Cavendish wasn’t best pleased.
