The clothes that help you go further, recover faster and even avoid injury, compression baselayers are growing in popularity, we tell you why.

skins set

We recently reviewed Skins new DNAmic baselayers, you can read the full reviews here (longs) and here (top). We were so impressed that we felt it necessary to put together a list of 4 reasons why anyone who partakes in exercise should consider buying a set for themselves.

1. ‘Dynamic gradient compression’ is Skins’ terminology for the figure-hugging way its baselayers will increase both your endurance performance and decrease the amount of time it takes for your body to recover – so whether your adventures are on foot, bike or with a paddle you can do more, recover quicker, then do it all again!

2. Skins’ DNAmic longs and top do this by wrapping and supporting your key muscle groups as they propel you through your active pursuits, the compression of the material increasing blood circulation, with the dual benefits of helping to oxygenate muscles and return blood towards your heart. The extra support also cuts out inefficient muscle movements and vibrations caused as you move, reducing soft tissue damage and post-exercise soreness.

3. This is more than just tight clothing though, with even the weave and thread types of the fabric playing an important role in delivering benefits. Called ‘warp knit’ this fabric mixes stretch, and non-stretch fibres, to ensure specific levels of elasticity as you move. This is another reason sizing is so important, and why Skins uses a body mass index-based sizing chart rather than traditional measures.

4. Born in Australia Skins knows plenty about exercising safely in harsh sunshine, so all their clothing fabrics have a UV protection of 50+. They’re built to deal with your heat too and wick moisture away from the skin to keep you comfortable and dry, so that when you get hot, you don’t get sweaty.
