Author of Wilderness Weekends, Phoebe Smith picks five wonderful UK wild camping spots.

Erme Plains, Dartmoor

Wild camping is positively encouraged on Dartmoor. So possible sites are endless, from close to sheltered, bubbling streams, to granite hilltops with stunning views. Erme Plains near Ivy Bridge, has plenty of both options and the world’s longest stone row to explore.

Ennerdale, Lake District

In the western Lakes, the Ennerdale Valley is part of a conservation project where roaming free is promoted and wild camping unofficially tolerated in an ever-wilder landscape. Walk to Blackbeck Tarn to camp, before climbing Wainwright’s Hay Stacks.

Sandwood Bay, Scotland

With no road access and reached by a flat 4 mile walk, this magical beach in north-west Scotland, with its sea stack, mile-long pink sands and turquoise waters is thought to be one of Britain’s most unspoilt beaches. Camp in the dunes between the loch and the sea while the Cape Wrath lighthouse sweeps the night sky.

Carneddau, Snowdonia

Just a valley away from the busy tourist bustle of Snowdon itself, on the other side of Ogwen, are the wild Carneddau. At the bottom of Cwm Dulyn is a bothy which you can sleep in or camp outside before you climb the peaks of Drum and Foel Fras.

Grwyne Fawr, S. Wales

By-passed for the more famous neighbouring Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains butt right up to the English border in South Wales. This relative obscurity is great for wild campers, with plenty of summit camping options, or sheltered river-side spots like Mynydd Bychan.
