Ten years ago I got my first Icebreaker Tech Top, and it's still going strong today despite some obvious (and hardly unexpected) signs of wear and tear.

This new version, with the same long sleeves and half-zip, looks even more stylish than my old base layer and is very bit as warm and comfortable.

Made from 100 per cent 260-weight merino it works equally well next to your skin (where the merino feels superbly comfortable) or as a mid-layer, performing the dual tasks of keeping you warm in cold conditions and cool in warm conditions as well as any base layer I've ever worn.

The non-itch, wicking and breathable fabric is also naturally odour-resistant (which is great since you'll probably want to wear it all the time!) and it can also be machine washed, after which it dries very quickly.

The fit is relatively snug without being tight, and the half-zip allows effective temperature regulation. The Tech Top essentially is an outdoor garment you can wear just about anywhere and cut a dash, and with its amazing durability it means the relatively high price is well worth it.
