The storm-battered South West has had a timely boost with The South West Coast Path National Trail being voted the Best British Walking Route by members of the Ramblers Association.

The Coast Path, which is worth a not insignificant £436m to the region’s tourism, is one of the ultimate UK challenges for long-distance hikers. It runs round 630 miles of spectacular West Country coastline from Minehead in north Devon to South Haven Point in Dorset and usually takes about 30 days to complete.

Mark Owen, the National Trail Officer for the South West Coast Path says: “While walkers need to take care when walking along the more rural routes that are harder to reach and may take longer to repair, the majority is still safe, especially in the more urban areas.” southwestcoastpath.com

The runners up for the British walking route were the Coast to Coast, (coast2coast.co.uk) in second place and the West Highland Way (west-highland-way.co.uk) in third.

The best overseas walk as voted for by Ramblers Association members was the Tour du Mont Blanc. See autourdumontblanc.com for more information, with the runners up being Corsica’s GR20 (le-gr20.com) and the Inca Trail (incatrailperu.com) in second and third place respectively.
