SIR RANULPH FIENNES – Mon 25th May 2.30pm
The legendary Sir Ranulph Fiennes, whose interview you’ll find in the May issue of Active Traveller, will be a seminar star guest on Monday 25th May at 2.30pm. Sir Ranulph was described by The Guinness Book of Records as the “world’s greatest living explorer” in 1984, and has since gone on to break more world records and led many more expeditions to remote regions. He truly is an icon for adventure travel. Sir Ranulph will be talking about his life and various exploits such as reaching both the North and South poles by foot as well as his unsupported crossing of the Antarctic Continent, which was in turn the longest unsupported polar journey in history. FELICITY ASTON – Sat, Sun & Mon 12.00pm
Felicity Aston is the first and only woman in the world to ski across Antarctica alone. The 1744km, 59-day journey completed in January 2012 also made her the first person in the world to do so purely by muscle power without the aid of kites or machines. The popular US adventure sport magazine ‘Outside’, named her a 2012 Adventurer of the Year and she has recently been given the 2014 Women of Discovery Courage Award.
In 2009 she led the 38-day, 911km Kaspersky Lab Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition, the largest women’s team ever to ski to the South Pole. Previously, Felicity has led several other notable expeditions including the first British women’s crossing of Greenland, a 700km winter crossing of Lake Baikal in Siberian and an adventurous expedition in Iceland for young people with a brain injury. She was also part of the first, ever, all-female team to complete the Polar Challenge, a 500km endurance race to the magnetic north pole and has completed the notorious Marathon Des Sables, a 150-mile foot race across the Sahara.
