In addition, UK road cycling legend Graeme Obree will be appearing as one of the main speakers in the Theatre by the Lake. During the 1990s, Obree was one of the UK's top cyclists and, during an eventful career, he twice broke the prestigious world hour record and was twice the 4km pursuit world champion. He famously used washing machine parts to build his record-breaking ‘Old Faithful’ bike.
Obree has set his sights on attempting the cycling world land speed record (which currently stands at just under 83mph) and has started the preparation to mount a serious challenge. He will give the festival audience an insight into his ambitious plans and his latest homemade bike, ‘The Beastie’.
The Keswick Mountain Festival 2013 Bike programme is sponsored by outdoor brand Dare2b and the company will be hosting two key attractions: the Bike Air Bag and M.A.D Bike Demo Team.
There’ll be the chance to get in the saddle yourself, as well. From a full day mountain biking on the fells with Wild Bike, to demo road bike rides, mountain bike coaching and kids’ LikeaBike sessions with Cyclewise, there’s something for anyone with an interest in cycling.
The festival is held in Cumbria from 15-19 May. For more information about the festival visit www.keswickmountainfestival.co.uk, or call 01539 729048.
